I Didn’t Think Olive Oil Was Worth Splurging On - Until I Tried This One

For me, Brightland products are the kind of upgrade that earns their place in your kitchen. Not because they’re flashy, but because their quality shows up every time you use them.

Why this California-made brand quietly changed how I think about good ingredients

We've partnered with Brightland to bring you this review. Rest assured — we only collaborate with brands that pass our testing standards, and we'd never recommend something we wouldn't use ourselves.

It was always on my radar

If you’re like me, you’ve seen Brightland olive oil everywhere: all over social media, on the shelf at the grocery store, and maybe even in your foodie best friend’s kitchen. The bottles are beautiful in that quiet, intentional way—the kind of thing that makes your kitchen feel a little more considered just by being there. It felt like a brand I should know more about, but I’d never actually tried it.

I care about how things taste, but I also keep things simple. I’ve always had a go-to olive oil from Costco that I’ve used for everything and never really thought twice about. So while I appreciated the idea of something nicer, it felt… optional.

The moment it clicked

Everything changed during a dinner at a friend’s house.

She had a bottle of Brightland’s Awake extra virgin olive oil that we drizzled over warm bread and a simple salad. I took a bite and immediately noticed this bright, almost grassy flavor, followed by a peppery kick that lingered just slightly in the back of my throat.

It made me stop mid-bite. Not in a dramatic way—just enough to think, wait… this tastes different.

That was the moment I understood that good olive oil can actually make a difference.

What makes it different

Brightland, at its core, is about crafting olive oil more intentionally. Everything is made from California-grown olives, pressed and bottled with a real focus on freshness—which matters more than I realized. Olive oil doesn’t get better with time, it fades, so how it’s handled directly influences how it tastes.

There’s also a level of care with Brightland that’s hard to fake. No blending with other oils, no artificial anything, just the real ingredient done well. They even have an in-house oleologist whose job is to make sure every batch delivers on flavor and quality.

You can absolutely taste that commitment to purposeful production when you use their products. I sure did when I tried Brightland’s Duo gift set, which pairs the Awake olive oil I had at my friend’s with their other bestselling bottle, Alive.

Awake is deep and robust, with that peppery finish that lingers just enough. Alive is softer and smoother, something you reach for when you want a lighter touch. Both have this clean, vibrant quality that makes any plate feel more complete.

The part that surprised me

I’ve been adding the olive oil to my favorite NYT recipe (the Lemony Shrimp and Bean Stew), and it’s one of those subtle upgrades that makes the whole dish feel brighter and more layered. It’s also the kind of thing you reach for without thinking—on eggs, on toast, over a quick salad.

And the ice cream with olive oil craze is real. Vanilla ice cream, a drizzle of olive oil, flaky salt. It sounds like a stretch, but it’s rich, slightly savory, and unexpectedly good in a way that makes you go back for another bite immediately.

Brightland’s EVOO is one of those ingredients that quietly does a lot, and once you notice that, the rest of the brand starts to feel less like a natural extension of that same idea.

Where it gets more fun

The Artist Series Set leans into flavor in a way that’s actually useful. Lemon, chili, basil, garlic—each one blended into their olive oil so you can add something extra to a recipe without having to think about it.

The basil is fresh and slightly sweet, perfect for pasta or anything tomato-based. The lemon lifts seafood and vegetables. The garlic has that slow-cooked depth you usually only get from taking your time. And the chili adds the perfect kick to everything from pizza to hummus. Together, they’re the kind of shortcuts that still feel considered, not to mention delicious.

Each bottle is designed by a different artist, which gives them a slightly more personal, collected charm. It’s the set you’ll leave out on your counter not just because you’ll use it constantly, but also because it looks good sitting there.

The one that feels like a gift (even when it’s not)

The Hill House Set pairs two of Brightland’s most-loved oils—Awake (bold, robust) and Ardor (a chili oil with a warm, slow heat)—in Hill House’s signature Poppy Damask print.

It’s a very usable duo, especially this time of year. Think ceviche with a little kick, grilled vegetables, or backyard pizza nights where a drizzle on top suddenly makes it feel like a culinary moment. Ardor brings the heat, Awake balances everything out.

And yes, the design is the cherry on top. It looks beautiful on your counter—but more importantly, it’s something you’ll actually reach for.

It’s giftable, but just as easy to keep for yourself.

If you want an easy way in

Brightland’s gift sets are an easy place to start, whether you’re shopping for yourself or someone else. The Essentials Set gives you their core EVOOs and premium vinegars in one package while the Mini Olive Oil set is a smart entry point if you want to try a broader range before committing.

The kind of upgrade that sticks

For me, Brightland products are the kind of upgrade that earns their place in your kitchen. Not because they’re flashy, but because their quality shows up every time you use them.

If you’re new to Brightland like I was, I’d go with the Duo.

If you want something more giftable or a little more expressive, the Artist Series is a really good next step.

And if you’re thinking about Mother’s Day, the Hill House set is one of those gifts that feels thoughtful without being overcomplicated. It’s beautiful, yes—but it’s also something she’ll actually use, which makes it feel more personal.

It also very easily doubles as a self-gift. The kind you buy with the full intention of giving away… and then quietly decide to keep.

Brightland is running a 20% off Mother’s Day promo on their gift sets, so now is a great time to try one (or multiple).

Feelin’ a little more inspired? A lot more obsessed? Same.💖
