I tried a DIY mirror frame instead of replacing my builder grade mirror. Here's how it went.

I was in the middle of upgrading our bathroom when one thing started bothering me more than expected: the giant builder-grade mirror.

The vanity was coming together. The lighting finally felt right. But the plain mirror still made the whole room feel unfinished - like the default setting the builder forgot to update. I briefly looked into replacing it entirely, but every option quickly spiraled into a bigger project.

And honestly, I’m always a little skeptical of “super easy” home DIY projects after years of opening boxes filled with 47 screws and an emotional support instruction manual.

But before going down the contractor route, I figured this was worth trying first.

Then I stumbled onto Mirrormate.

The idea was surprisingly simple: keep the existing mirror, add a custom frame around it, and completely change the look of the room without replacing the mirror itself - all in under 30 minutes.

And honestly? I underestimated how much one small detail could completely change the feeling of the entire bathroom.

Replacing the Mirror Felt Weirdly Complicated

My first instinct was to replace the mirror entirely. But the deeper I got into renovation TikTok and Reddit threads, the more I realized how quickly “just replace the mirror” becomes an actual project.

Coordinating installation. Potential wall repair. The possibility of accidentally turning a cosmetic update into something expensive — or worse, dangerous. No thank you.

What made Mirrormate feel smart was that it solved the visual problem without replacing the existing mirror itself. The frame installs directly onto your current mirror, is custom-sized to fit, and comes in more than 50 styles so you can find the perfect match.

At that point, framing the mirror instead of replacing it just made a lot more sense.

Installation Was Much Less Dramatic Than Replacing the Mirror

Once the frame arrived, the whole process felt surprisingly manageable. I installed it myself in about 30 minutes, and the only tool I needed was a small hammer to hit the corner pieces into place.

I ended up choosing the Soho Matte Black frame because it added contrast without feeling too heavy or trendy. The clean lines felt minimalist, but it still gave the bathroom more character and definition - especially against the lighter walls and warmer wood tones.

We wanted a second opinion on our measurements just for peace of mind, and their team actually walked us through everything over the phone. (Major bonus points for having real customer service available five days a week specifically for this purpose.) Once that was squared away, the actual installation was surprisingly straightforward — honestly one of the easiest DIY projects I’ve done.

What surprised me most, though, was how custom it looked once it was up. Not “internet hack” custom. Actually-designed-for-the-room custom.

What Actually Changed

What changed wasn’t just the mirror itself - it was the way the entire bathroom felt afterward.

Almost immediately, the room felt warmer, calmer, and more pulled together. The mirror no longer disappeared into the wall, the countertops somehow looked less visually chaotic, and even getting ready in the morning felt a little more enjoyable.

It’s funny how one unfinished-looking detail can quietly affect an entire space. And once it’s fixed, you realize how much visual weight it was carrying the whole time.

The One Thing I’d Flag

I do think choosing the right frame color or finish can feel a little stressful online - especially when you’re trying to match existing tones in your bathroom.

Mirrormate offers frame samples, which honestly makes the process much easier. Being able to hold the sample blocks up against your vanity, hardware, lighting, and paint colors takes a lot of the guesswork out of choosing the right frame.

We also talked to our friends at Mirrormate and got a code for free samples for Splendid Shopper readers, so you can use code SPLENDID if you want to test out a few finishes before committing.

Who This Upgrade Is Actually For

Now that I’ve done this DIY, I keep spotting places where it would make such a difference. Guest bathrooms. Rental apartments. That almost-finished space that just needs one small upgrade to feel intentional.

It’s especially good for bathrooms that already have solid bones but still feel slightly incomplete.

And because it doesn’t require replacing the actual mirror, it delivers a surprising amount of visual payoff without turning into a full renovation project.

Honestly, that’s probably why I loved it so much. The transformation ended up feeling way bigger than I expected — like the entire bathroom finally clicked into place. It didn’t just update the mirror; it completed the space.

Feelin’ a little more inspired? A lot more obsessed? Same.💖
