The Kitchen Gadgets Actually Worth the Counter Space

October 19, 2026

Eight things that earn a permanent spot, and one honest note about the appliance graveyard in your cabinet.

Everyone has the cabinet. The one with the bread maker from 2021, the milk frother that came free with something, and a spiralizer that saw exactly one zucchini. Counter space is the most expensive real estate in an apartment, and most kitchen gadgets are not paying rent. So we applied one rule to this whole list: would you actually reach for it this week, and does it look like something you'd want to see every morning while waiting for coffee? Eight made the cut, from a $52 cutting board to an espresso machine that's genuinely worth the splurge.

[box-b: wonder-owen]

The single best counter-space math on this list. The Wonder Oven does six jobs (air fry, bake, roast, toast, broil, reheat) in a footprint of 11.5" wide by 10.6" deep, which means it retires a separate air fryer, a toaster, and most of what you were using the big oven for. It preheats in under two and a half minutes, uses steam infusion so things don't dry out, and the accessories skip PTFE, PFOA, PFAS, lead, and cadmium entirely. It fits a 4.5 lb chicken or a 9" pizza. The sage and steam colorways are the reason it ends up in everyone's kitchen photos.

[box-b: stagg-ekg-electric-kettle]

The object that made everyone care what their kettle looks like. The Stagg EKG Pro holds temperature to within half a degree, has a hold mode you can set for 15 to 60 minutes, and includes a scheduling function so it's hot before you're conscious. The gooseneck spout is the real functional argument, giving you actual control over a pour-over instead of a hopeful splash. It comes in ten colorways including Desert Rose with a maple handle and Smoke Green, and there's a Studio Edition with a glass base for $199.95. Tea drinkers get just as much out of it as coffee people.

[box-b: bambino-plus-espresso-machine]

If you're spending $6 a day on oat lattes, this pays for itself in about ten weeks. The Bambino Plus is 11.9 inches wide, which is remarkable for a machine that hits extraction temperature in three seconds flat thanks to Breville's ThermoJet system. The automatic milk texturing gives you real microfoam with three temperature and texture settings, or you can steam manually with the wand if you want to learn. Currently marked down from $499.95. It's the smallest genuinely good espresso machine we've found, and "genuinely good" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

[box-b: mini-600-plus-blender]

A blender with a 4.13-inch square footprint, which is smaller than most coffee mugs take up. The Beast Mini runs a 600-watt motor through ribbed vessels that keep everything circulating, so it handles frozen fruit and greens rather than just politely stirring a protein shake. The straw cap system means you blend and drink from the same vessel and skip the pouring step entirely. It comes with three sizes (14, 18, and 22 oz) and five colors including Sand and Terra. This is the small-kitchen answer to needing a blender without surrendering a third of your counter.

[box-b: the-mk-free-board]

The only non-appliance here, and the one you'll touch most. Material was co-founded by Eunice Byun, and the MK Free Board is their answer to the microplastics problem with plastic cutting boards: it's made from bioplastic using biopolymers and natural clay minerals, 100% USDA certified biobased, with no fossil fuels or PFAS, manufactured in Finland. At 17.5" x 12" it's big enough to actually work on, it's non-porous so raw proteins are fine, it has a juice groove, and it's dishwasher safe with a lifetime guarantee. It looks good enough to leave out, which is the entire point. Their Knives + Stand set is $295 if you want the matching moment.

[box-b: artisan-series-5-quart-tilt-head-stand-mixer]

The one appliance nobody argues about leaving out, and the only thing here that doubles as decor. The 5-quart stainless bowl handles nine dozen cookies in a batch across 10 speeds, and it ships with the flat beater, dough hook, wire whip, and pouring shield, so there's nothing else to buy on day one. The part that earns the counter space is the hub on the front: more than ten optional attachments turn it into a pasta roller, a meat grinder, a spiralizer, an ice cream maker. That's the whole thesis of this list in one machine. It comes in 33 colors, currently $399.99 down from $499.95, and it will outlive the kitchen you put it in.

[box-b: the-toaster-pro]

The splurge, and the most beautiful thing on this list. You pour 5cc of water in before each use, and the steam creates a thin layer around the bread that crisps the outside while the inside stays soft, which sounds like marketing until you eat day-old sourdough out of it. There are dedicated modes for shokupan, golden toast, pizza, and croissants, plus a proper oven mode and a salamander grill setting for top-down searing. At 14.1" wide it's not small. It's here because people who own one talk about it like a pet.

[box-b: swirl-by-creami-soft-serve-ice-cream-maker]

The honest one. This is a unitasker, it's 17 inches tall, and by the logic of this entire article it should live in a cabinet. It's on the list anyway, because the 13 programs (ice cream, gelato, sorbet, frozen yogurt, milkshake, and six new soft serve modes with an actual swirl handle) turn frozen fruit or a protein base into something genuinely good, and people use it far more than they expect to. Currently down from $349.99. Buy it if you have kids, a dessert habit you'd like to make cheaper, or a real freezer. Skip it if your counter is already a Tetris board.

The test was never whether a gadget is clever. Plenty of clever things are sitting in that cabinet. The test is whether it collapses two objects into one, or does a thing so well that you change how you cook around it.

The Wonder Oven and the Bambino are the two that most obviously buy back space and money. The Fellow kettle and the Material board are the ones you'll use daily without thinking about it. Balmuda is a want, not a need, and we respect that about it. Start with one, live with it for a month, and only then let anything else onto the counter.

Splendid Shopper Tip: Before you buy any appliance, measure your actual usable counter run and subtract six inches, because almost everything needs clearance behind it and most of us forget the backsplash exists. And check the cabinet first. There's a decent chance the thing you're about to order is already in there, still in the box. 🌿
